Mormons did it first

So one of the most influential religious scholars around today, Bishop N.T. Wright of Durham, England, has recently written a book, called Suprised by Hope. Apparently it is making waves in the worldwide christian community; he says that most christians are wrong about what heaven really is and what happens during ressurrection. This guy is a bigwig, too, he's like the 4th most powerful leader in the Anglican Church. Anyway, he was on the Colbert Report the other day, and for some of you reading this blog, what he has to say should sound very familiar.... before we discuss, click here and watch the clip. The Bishop is on near the end, but the whole show is pretty funny, and one of Colbert's other special guests is Cookie Monster. No, really, go watch this thing.

Okay? Okay?!??! Everything this guy is saying, the LDS Church has been saying, for, like, forever. For you Mormons out there, I mean that literally, but for those of you who aren't, then, at least since the LDS church was founded in 1830. And the Bishop here says that he got these ideas from a careful reading of the New Testament.... well, duh. If people want to believe the Bible, then they should read it, so, good for him. I tend to agree with him, that the church Jesus set up was changed and altered by Greek gnostic philosophy, and that the concept of heaven as an endlessly bland sea of clouds is about as appealing as eating hot glass for the rest of eternity.

Not to toot our own horn or anything, but can anyone else see that world secretly follows whatever Mormons do? Like, geneology and family history are so big and trendy right now, but again, the LDS church has been doing this for over a century. All that stuff about preparing your home for disaster and having a small food supply, since 9/11 and the scare of nuclear infractions with North Korea and Iran? Again, we've been told to be prepared and self-sufficient for, like, decades. All those business articles about cutting debt out of your life? Again, Mormons got there first. Overall numbers of people who use tobacco or cigarettes are going down, due to extensive public health campaigns and better education, but there again, the LDSer's have been teaching that for over a century. Have any of you heard about all the churches and wedding chapels now changing their standard vows away from "'till death do you part" and instead saying that the marriage will last forever? Mormons have been doing that for as long as there have been mormons. Even those crazy polygamists in Texas and Arizona still call themselves Mormons, even though they are wrong, because they want to be cool like us. And I'm convinced we started that fashion trend for women to wear knee-length shorts.
